The Extension House

This project represents a thoughtful restoration and renovation of a home, where the intent was to breathe new life into the existing structure while retaining its soul. Located on a 2,500 sq. ft. plot with a total builtup area of 4,000 sq. ft., the house—originally a modest load-bearing structure—stood with aging finishes and an underutilized spatial layout.

Through a series of careful interventions, the home has now been transformed into a contemporary residence tailored to the evolving needs of its occupants.

Every design move in this renovation was guided by the intention to respect the original structure while enhancing its livability and aesthetic appeal. The new elements—fabricated slab extensions, light-filled rooms, earthy material palette, and smart spatial planning—merge seamlessly with the existing framework.

  • Design Strategy & Spatial Reconfiguration:

One of the major structural changes was the extension of the open terrace on the first floor, which was reimagined into a cosy, informal seating room. This new space now serves as a light-filled lounge area, defined by large glass openings that bring in an abundance of Morning light while offering a framed view of the street below.

On the ground floor, what was previously a outdoor space was converted into a dining space that connects seamlessly with the rest of the home. This addition not only maximized the floor area but also created an intimate indoor-outdoor experience.

  • Material Palette & Elevation Treatment:

A defining feature of this project is its refined elevation design. The façade now boasts a mix of exposed brickwork and terracotta jali, infusing the exterior with warmth and texture while maintaining a dialogue with the home’s existing built form. The terracotta jali serves both aesthetic and functional purposes—filtering light, ensuring privacy, and encouraging passive ventilation.

The contrast between the textured brick and smooth plaster finishes, along with sleek metal railings and fabricated extensions, introduces a balanced modernism to the structure without overpowering its original form.
